Design for Manufacturing (DFM)

Design for Manufacturing is the process of designing a product in such a way that it is optimized for both performance and manufacturing cost. There are many ways to manufacture and assemble a product, and by applying DFM principles throughout the development process, we ensure that the final design is successful for both you and your customers.

Optimizing manufacturing costs is extremely important for startup and large companies alike. Some of the most important contributing factors to manufacturing cost include:

  • Manufacturing method (injection molding, extrusion, machining, casting, etc.)
  • Assembly process
  • Part and component complexity
  • Materials choices
  • Dimensional tolerance of components (precision of parts)
  • Supply chain considerations (Shipping, Quality checks & Q/A)
  • Labor (Machine setup, part finishing, assembly, etc.)

At Kickr, DFM principles are applied throughout the entire product development process, not just towards the end. Most of the principles are applied during CAD, and all our engineers are experts in implementing these principles. By keeping manufacturing in mind from the start of your project, your product will be optimized for quality and cost for you and your customers.
