The Client
Moxie Medical is a two person team, one of which is an orthopedic surgeon who was inspired to develop a hammer tool that improves the hammer action for installation and removal of orthopedic implants.
The Challenge
In modern orthopedic surgery, traditional manual tools like hammers and slap hammers are commonly used for implant insertion and removal. However, these methods can be physically demanding and may lack precision. To address these challenges, the client sought a device capable of delivering higher impact forces than current systems, facilitating both the insertion and extraction of orthopedic implants. The proposed solution involved developing a bi-directional pneumatic device, switchable via a simple mechanism, to enhance surgical efficiency, reduce surgeon fatigue, and improve patient outcomes.
The Solution
- We created a custom pneumatic hammer that could apply a bi-directional force depending on a user selected input. This was a huge help to the client because it allowed them to take the design and do fundraising and begin the process of getting ready for FDA regulatory submission.
The Results
We delivered a working prototype that the client was able to test and use for fundraising. Currently Moxie is in the process of putting together a DHF and preparing for FDA regulatory submission.
